We hope everyone had a great Easter break and you enjoy the next six months of the official ‘Off Season’ for Surf Life Saving, however there will still be lots of training and social activities going on at the club for all members to get involved with. Two important dates for your diaries is of course our ‘End of Season’ break up for the over 18’s – Casino Royale, which is guaranteed to be loads of fun for all. The social committee have organised an awesome night, so if you haven’t purchased your tickets yet, make sure you do and celebrate the end of a great season with your Henley SLSC mates.
Then our all-important Senior Presentation Night on 3rd June. An important evening to recognise and reward not only the club’s outstanding achievements in competition, but also the members who have made significant contributions to the club this season. It’s always a great informal and social night and we encourage you to come along and support your fellow club members.
I’d like to personally thank my fellow Board of Management members – Kevin, Carly, Mark and Peter for their support of me in my first season as Club President. Whilst there’s been a lot to learn, together we’ve introduced some great initiatives which I look forward to continuing to develop in the months ahead. As always, I’d also like to thank all of our Club Members and Staff for making the Henley SLSC the great club it is and for supporting our new Club Values – HENLEY FIRST – Family, Integrity, Respect, Safety and Teamwork.

Thanks to Henley Patrolling Members
Huge thanks to our 11 Henley Patrol teams and to every member who has helped keep our beautiful beach & ocean safe this season. Since October 2016, the dedication of our volunteers has meant we have been able to successfully meet our club/SLSSA agreement on every one of 74 patrols. This includes SurfCom, special events, traditional, standby and both morning and afternoon patrols. |
|
Checking Patrol Hours
As the input of patrol hours is a manual process, it’s important for each member to double check the stats each season. Please don’t leave it until close to the competition entry deadline before logging onto the SLS portal. Go to https://portal.sls.com.au/ and, if you have any queries, just let me know ( vice-captain@henleyslsc.com.au) It’s easy to check records as we keep hard copies.

Meeting patrol commitments at Henley wouldn’t be possible without the amazing team who organise training and maintain vital lifesaving equipment. Thank you to Paul Leonard (Chief Instructor) Tim Cavanagh & Scott Mather (IRB officers), Joey Loielo (First Aid Officer), Darren Hocking (ATV Officer) and Shane Johns (Radio Operator)

Grievance Officers
You don’t need to write a letter, you can simply call, email or approach one of the club’s Grievance Officers in person. You can do this with the full trust that anything that is shared with the Grievance Officers will remain confidential, even from their own partners. The Grievance Officer’s role is to help you to determine how you want to proceed with your grievance and then assist you with the process. The aim is for a healthy resolution for all involved, rather than allowing issues or complaints to remain unresolved and fester. The process is designed to educate and create a more harmonious club environment for everyone.
I know from personal experience that there have been times when I have upset people and I’ve had no idea of the impact of my words or actions. Once they have had the opportunity to explain this to me, not only have they felt better but it has also made me a better person as I become more aware of what I say and do.
So let’s live the club’s new HENLEY FIRST values and when you are aggrieved about something, share it, tell a Grievance Officer and resolve it.
Club Chaplin
Another option available to all members is the opportunity to talk confidentially to our Club Chaplin, Bruce Rankin. This can be on matters that have nothing to do with the Club. If you are experiencing stress at work, conflict with family, a death, a divorce or you’re just not feeling yourself emotionally, Bruce’s role is to be available to assist our members on any personal matter in a fully confidential environment and is not connected to the Grievance Officers.
No Henley member should ever feel bullied, discriminated, harassed or disrespected.
Wetsuits
Thank you to every one who has supplied me with old wetsuits. It has allowed a number of people to do safety training in the water who normally would have missed out due to the cold water. Also, the extra buoyancy provided by the wetsuit is beneficial in getting people who have never been in the ocean before to relax.
However, I now need more wet suits especially large sized suits. So if you are upgrading your wet suits for winter, pass on your old one to me so I can use it for training. Contact me and I’ll come around to your place to pick it up or leave it at the club where I can find it.
Thanks – Roy

On The Same Wave is preparing to transition to continue our swimming training in the pool as the water is cooling down.
We have two people doing their Bronze Assessment this weekend and will have plenty to celebrate at a Shared Meal on Saturday night.
This month we had some of our On The Same Wave participants assisting with two sessions at the Unley Pool for Syrian Refugee children. It was a proud moment. Everyone enjoyed themselves and Behzad and Matthew have been inspired to do their Training Officer Award. That means that next year our participants will be doing the training.
Enjoy winter training,
Shannon, Regan and Dale |

On 12th April, the Board of Management invited all of our club Sponsors and Big Row support vessels to a special dinner in appreciation of their continued support. We had 38 people attend the dinner, giving us the opportunity to summarise the achievements of our Big Row 2017 event and start the planning process for Big Row 2018. Our Club Patron John Butterfield and former Club President Neville Fielder, were able to provide a background to our club’s history and how the Big Row event was originally conceived for our more recent sponsors. Then Kerry Saul our Sponsorship Manager shared his plans to support our sponsors better, including a formal promotional program for their businesses.
Our sponsors are crucial to our club’s success and we encourage all our members to support our sponsors wherever possible. Keep an eye out on our social media pages and our club Newsletters (including this one) for the monthly specials that our Sponsors will be offering Henley club members.
A huge thank you to Kerry Saul and Greg Heath for all the outstanding work they have put into the Sponsorship area this season. What a great team !! |

During April we welcomed our Sponsors to our Club and thanked them for their valuable support this year. We let them know our sponsorship plans for next season and gave them the opportunity to voice their ideas and views. Everyone enjoyed the night and those who visited the club for the first time loved the food and views.

Aussies 2017
This year we had a smaller crew of 28 competitors and their families/cheer squad attend Aussies 2017 at North Kirra, QLD over the week of 25 March to 2 April. Unfortunately not everyone got to compete due to a Cyclone called Debbie! Our Open Competitors were affected by this and as a result most competition was abandoned due to safety and water quality. This was disappointing for those people who have trained all year for this event and invested a large amount of money to get to Aussies to not be able to compete. These people were: Ciara McGeahy, Courtney Smallacombe, Skye Davoren, Emil Viljoen, Jandre Van Der Walt, Stefan Van Der Walt and Hamish Lindsay..
Youth Championships (U14 & U15)
Kayla Roe was our only youth competitor from Henley competing in the U15 Females against a massive group of young ladies. With such large numbers the cuts were hard! Kayla made it through to the Semi Finals for Ironwoman and Swim and quarter finals of boards, and came 6th in Australia for the 2km run.
Masters Championships (30 years plus)
Claire Burke- 30-34years – 8th Swim FINAL
Scott Robinson – 40-44 years- 11th Ski SEMI
David Foureur- 50-54 years – 10th Ski FINAL
Brett Roe – 45-49 years – 8th 2km Run & 13th Ironman FINAL
Rick Daley – 70+ years- 7th Sprint FINAL
Neville Fielder – 55-59 years- 4th Swim FINAL, 5th Tube FINAL
Andrew Lanyon – 55-59 years – 6th swim Final, SILVER Tube FINAL
John Ellice Flint – 65-69 years – 15th Board FINAL, SILVER Swim FINAL & GOLD Tube FINAL
Masters Championships Team Results
Scott, David & Andrew competed in the 150 years Ski Relay in a hotly contested field coming a very respectable 13th in the final in some very challenging surf that was dumping on the shore and out the back!!
Andrew, David & John had a fantastic Taplin race in the 170 years coming in 5th – another great race to watch and the boys didn’t leave anything left in the tank!
Scott, Neville & Brett raced a brilliant Taplin in the 150 years against the likes of Grant Kenny and other big names and came 13th in the final – they raced with heart and soul!
David and Scott had a very exciting double ski race in the 45-49 years and came 7th in the final – so close and they raced so well.
Andrew, John & Neville did it again in the 170 yrs swim team – GOLD
Andrew & Neville came 6th in the Board Rescue final.
Our Masters Boat Crews had a brilliant Aussies – The Hurricanes 140 years crew who consisted of Tara Clarke, Jane Dewar, Kirsty Rawlings & Carly Lutze with Kevin Fitzgerald as sweep came away with a silver medal! Well done ladies & Kevin.
The Amazons 120 years crew consisted of Hanna Kitchen, Suzi Gunn, Claire Burke & Kate Brereton with Ron Harwood sweeping took out Gold again for the 2nd year! Fantastic!!
Open Championships (U17 – Open)
– U19 Board Relay – Daniel Hogan, Edward Gates & Cooper Forest – 11th FINAL – the boys gave this race all they had and did a mighty fine job against some seriously strong competition.
– U19 Ski Relay – Daniel Hogan, Edward Gates & Cooper Forest – 13th FINAL. Rumour has it that this is the first Open Ski Relay team to make a final since the early 90’s? Well done boys – keep pushing hard!
– U17 2km Run – Edward Gates – 11th
A massive shout out to all those behind the scenes that make it possible for our team to get to Aussies: Trish Hogan for her tireless accommodation hunting, Brett Roe, Phil Hogan and Kevin Fitzgerald for towing of craft / boats, Paul ‘Digger’ Martin for photos, Our IRB Drivers – Kevin Fitzgerald, Darren Hocking, Paul Martin, Neville Fielder and IRB Crew – Tara Clarke, Claire Burke, Courtney Smallacombe and Jandre Van Der Walt and to the Parents / Cheer Squad for all the encouragement to all our competitors – Well Done! |

At the recent Junior Presentation day Nicole took the opportunity to welcome our new members to the group and chatted to them about all the different things that we do in HET. We look forward to having them involved next season. |

Paintball 2017
We finally got to go and take aim at each other up at Delta Force at Monarto. There was 19 in total that came along for the journey. It was a fun day with plenty of bragging about who got the best “Cherry” bite wound and then who owned up to taking the pot shot.It was quite warm and with all that running around in a hot, dry and dusty paddock it certainly wore out our otherwise fit and active athletes. At the end of the day our group got to have a field to themselves and were able to split into two teams and shoot out to the end of all ammunition. They all enjoyed this bit the best.Over the off season we are looking to have a few catch ups/ dinners/ outings just to keep in touch, so keep an eye out on Facebook for what might be coming up next. |
