Gym and Fitness @ Henley SLSC

Sale of old Concept2 rowing ergos
When we have a date for arrival of the new ergs the old ones will be sold via the following process as approved by the BOM:

• The old ergs will be rated in condition order by a couple of experienced rowers.

• Any info we have regarding their condition will be posted on FB and the gym whiteboard prior to the auction.

• They will be sold in order of best rated to worst rated order with one being sold each week for 4 weeks.

• Remember it’s buyer beware, so I suggest if you’re interested, you give them all a try as a couple are very similar in condition.

• The process is for bids to go on a whiteboard in the gym from 6am Monday with the highest bid at 6pm Friday being successful.

• The successful bid will be notified as soon as possible with payment due within 7 days.

• Failing that, the second highest bidder will be contacted.

• The reserve is $50 and bids must exceed the previous highest by $5 or more.

Gym – Who can use it?

To use the gym you must be a financial and proficient patrolling bronzie, a financial and proficient SRC (under supervision), a club life member or a financial (club gym approved) associate member.

There was a recent instance reported of non gym qualifiers using the gym area. The club is serious about keeping this privilege for those it was intended, so please report any unauthorised use and don’t lend your FOB to anyone else.

Please be advised, Saturday club swims have now finished for the year. Training at Immanuel pool continues as per the below schedule:

On Friday 3rd and Saturday 4th February, Henley SLSC held our annual Big Row, where members row a surf boat from Stansbury on the Yorke Peninsula to Henley Beach.

On Friday, club members facilitated a nippers session with the Stansbury and Curramulka primary schools. All the kids had a great time at the event, organised by Barrie Cole.

On Saturday afternoon the Henley entourage headed to the Stansbury bowls club for some bowls, dinner and raffle competitions. A great time was had by all, with fantastic hospitality from our Stansbury bowls club friends.

On Saturday morning, the four crews set off at 6am from the Stansbury boat ramp, with 5 support boats and 2 IRBs also making the crossing.

Weather conditions were near perfect and the rowers had an incident-free crossing. Everyone had a front row seat to a large display of dolphins, swimming along with our boats for much of the journey.

The assistance and hospitality from our 5 support boats, Iluka, Four Seventy, Andante, Time Out and Salty was outstanding and we thank them for their time and support of the event.

The boat arrived back at Henley at 2pm, to a large crowd of nippers, sponsors and general public.

Overall the event raised $47k in cash donations and several more thousand in in-kind donations.

The restaurant will also be open on Monday 13th March for the Adelaide Cup public holiday.

Surf Boats – Australian Open 2017

The 2017 ASRL National Title was held in Shellharbour NSW over the weekend of 17-19 Feb with clubs from all over Australia attending for the hope of success. This included a great spread of SA crews from Henley, Somerton, Glenelg, Port Elliot and Brighton. South Australia managed a 4th place overall in the Interstate Challenge behind NSW, QLD and WA. It was a great weekend with all four seasons over 3 days – hot, downpours, muggy, thunderstorms and an occasional burst of lightning, causing officials to postpone racing on the Friday and Saturday.

Regardless of the interruptions, Henley managed to pull off our most successful ASRL Open ever!!

Four crews represented the state in the Interstate Challenge, and rowed for Henley in their respective divisions:

• Open Women – the Strikers (Jo Malcolm, Regan Smallacombe, Laura Cassidy, Emma Cassidy, swept by Darren Hocking) managed to hold their own in this tough division, gaining a 10^th place in the point score from the first four rounds. Unfortunately, only the top 9 went through, but several of their races could have gone either way to give them a spot in the Semis. Backing it up on Sunday, they also rowed an excellent Interstate race to secure a 4^th place, with the remaining crews all joining them from behind on the same wave. These ladies are looking good for some decent results at Aussies.

• U19 Men – the Immigrants (Emil Viljoen, Jandre van der Walt, Stefan van der Walt, Ryan Froud, swept by Kevin Fitzgerald) enjoyed their ASRL debut through a flying start, with the boys securing a 6^th place in the point score for the first four rounds and making it through a Knockout round to the Semi-final. Also securing a 3^rd place in the Interstate Challenge, these boys are showing some great potential, especially when up against veteran clubs such as Nth Cronulla, Torquay and Palm Beach. With 5 weeks until the big event, these boys should be very excited to see how they go at Aussies in March this year.

• Reserve Women – the Amazons (Skye Davoren, Hannah Kitchin, Suzi Gunn, Courtney Smallacombe, swept by Ron Harwood) managed a dominant performance all weekend, topping the points from the first four rounds, winning their Knockout round and gaining a convincing win in the Semi Final, placing them in a good lane with high hopes for the final. Not off to a great start, the ladies were fighting for a place all the way out to the cans, securing a 3^rd behind Wollongong and Newport on the turn for the ride home. In a gradual fight to the end, the girls managed to gain that extra few metres over the other crews on every skate, paying homage to Ronnie’s dreaded “Anchor” training sessions. Eighty metres out from the finish and all three crews were chasing a lump to finish on, with Newport and Wollongong dropping off the back and the Amazons just managing to get far enough ahead before hitting the dead water and digging deep to keep the boat’s momentum across the line to take out a very hard-earned GOLD. They had us for a second there, but well done Amazons!

• Reserve Men – the Mackdogs (Stefan Starkey, Ross Hamilton, Jono Hersey, Colby Grace, swept by Darren Hocking) seemed to improve on performance with an 8^th place in the point score for the first four rounds, a win in the Knockout round and a 2^nd place in the Semi Final – bringing them through to what was probably the most entertaining final on the day. Getting a great start in a far lane, they unfortunately got smashed repeatedly in the break while other crews made it through with minimal carnage. The boys didn’t let it phase them as they recovered well and continued to chase down the rest of the competition. Turning the cans, the main crowd was focused on the four crews way out in front – Elouera, Palm Beach, Maroochydore and North Cottesloe – with only a handful of SA spectators noticing a little blue boat with a bold “ICON” powering up for a building lump in the distance, chasing the skate, trailing and catching the only wave from the gate can for the entire carnival. SA Spectators were cheering, in what still seemed like an impossible feat, as Henley started gaining on the 3rd and 4th place. In an unlikely event, both Maroochydore and North Cott broached metres from the finish line, allowed just enough time for Henley to pass through undetected to secure the BRONZE medal. SA went wild while the rest of the beach scratched their heads coming to terms with what had just happened and the commentators labelling it the “wave of the day”. A gutsy row Mackdogs!

  With Henley consistently being labelled good ‘flat water rowers’ across the event speakers at previous interstate events, we’re slowly combatting that perception with a brilliant array of guts, determination, strength and surf skill displayed by all crews at Shellharbour this year. Putting SA and HENLEY on the map!

Let me introduce the team our club has in place to assist you with any grievances that you may have and to ensure that the Codes of Conduct are followed. (We are looking for new people to join us over the winter break, so if you think you can help please let me know.)

Bruce’s role could be described quite simply as someone who will listen to you. Your issue doesn’t even need to be club related, and will be kept confidential. He has many years experience in the Community service and social welfare fields, and we are extremely lucky to have him on board. If you are not sure if your complaint warrants calling the Grievance Officers you can talk to Bruce and he will suggest possible approaches that you can take. He can be your support. He will not follow up grievances though. He’s is a helping role AND not investigative in any manner.
