Words from our President
Well it’s been quite a busy few weeks since the AGM and taking the reins from Phil Hogan. A huge thank you goes out to Phil for his last two years as President, his dedication and commitment has helped to make Henley the club it is today. Phil can now relax and enjoy the fruits of his labour, and should be very proud of everything he has achieved.
This year’s AGM saw a number of key roles filled by female club members, in particular across the Operations Committee. We now have a great balance across the club and a number of members stepping into committee roles for the first time, including Joey Loielo as First Aid Officer, Cooper Forest as Youth Advisor, Kirsty Rawlings as Social Coordinator and Hannah Kitchen as Web Master. We are still seeking volunteers to head up our Ski and Board areas. Should anyone be interested in those important roles, please talk to myself or Peter Oborn.
There is also a new role that has been created specifically to assist our members – Club Complaint Handler/Child Safe Club Officer which will be held by Roy Menner. This role is an initiative developed by SLSSA to offer club members someone to turn to should they encounter distress or conflict arising from their involvement in surf lifesaving, be it in relation to another member, an officer or an employee and the encounter warrants further investigation by the club or SLSSA.
In addition to this role, Henley has our Club Chaplain, Bruce Rankin, who is always available to counsel our members in any matters, be it personal or club related and is supported by our three Grievance Officers – Tayla Page, Steve Horsman and Tim Cavanagh.
A summary of all the new club Officers and their contact details will be updated and available on the Henley website in addition to a list that will be posted on the notice board in the corridor of the equipment shed.
NEW CLUB CORE VALUES
A team of Henley club members came together last month to form a workshop with the intent to develop a set of core values that will now be the platform for our club culture moving forward. Expertly facilitated by Rebecca Codd, the group were able to clarify what was important to our club members and identified the following key behaviour and shared values they see as being the core of our overall club culture.
The outcome is a now shared vision and the start of our journey to instill these core values into all we do at the Henley Surf Life Saving Club.
Henley members will start to see these core values promoted around the club and I would like to personally thank Rebecca Codd for leading this workshop and to the following club members who all contributed to this important process… Chris Fuller, Paul Martin, Megan Tudor, Bruce Rankin, Nicole Carey, Shannon Asa, Beck Forest, Steve Forest, Gary Tredrea, Grantley Anderson, Roy Menner, Kirsty Rawlings, Steve Parker, Peter Oborn, Carly Lutze and Kevin Fitzgerald.
Team Henley FIRST
Family – one united community
Integrity – lead by example
Respect – embracing diversity, encouraging unity
Safety – our core business
Teamwork – striving for excellence
S.A STATE GOVERNMENT VISIT TO HENLEY
On Monday 26th September, our club was hired by the S.A State Government to hold one of their State cabinet meetings. A wonderful opportunity to showcase our venue to Jay Weatherill, who was once a Henley Nipper and his senior Cabinet Ministers.

We are still seeking someone to take on the role of BBQ Coordinator for this season. Barrie Cole has stepped down after 10 years, so it is time for someone else to step up!
This season, the BBQ will be cooked by a roster of parents, so the Coordinator’s role is to purchase the stock, assist with set up/pack up of the BBQ area and to bank the proceeds of the BBQ.

Our Juniors program runs from 2 – 4pm on Saturdays. It is a requirement of SLSSA that we provide adequate water cover during this time. If you would like to assist with the Junior program by providing water cover on a weekly or fortnightly basis, please contact our Water Cover Coordinator, Catherine Booth at firstname.lastname@example.org. You will receive patrol hours if you sign on for the full 2 hour shift.

Wanted: Old wetsuits!Wondering what to do with that old wetsuit in the garage that you don’t wear any more?
Give it to the club. We can use wet suits when training new people for their Bronze or SRC.
They are especially useful for any of our On The Same Wave members who find the water very cold and would struggle to buy their own wetsuit.
The Henley On The Same Wave Program has built a strong connection throughout the winter months and our supporters are growing in number.
Brian, Shadrak, Behzad and James have been committed to improving their swimming and have been in the pool at Immanuel College most weeks over the winter months.
Becca Woods and Rachel Roe have been an absolutely amazing and gently encouraged these young men to improve and swim longer distances and prepare for Bronze Medallion.
Shadrak and Brian are cousins. They are both studying, Shadrak is studying International Business at Flinders Uni and Brian is studying Engineering at Uni SA.
Behzad and James are both Refugees from Iran and are delighting in their new skills.
Some of you may also remember Mustafa, a Woodville High School student who joined in on some swimming at the beach and Bronze Training last season.
These five will be joining a Bronze Training group commencing in late October and will be joining Patrols this season.
As well as sharing the pool and the beach, we have also shared a few meals. One evening everyone brought something to share and we had a multi-cultural culinary experience with lots of laughs and taste sensations.
We assume that the weather will actually improve over the next month and so hope to make it back to the beach on Saturday mornings.
Bring on the sun,
Dale and Shannon
Attention BeachiesLooking for members interested in competing in beach sprints, flags and relays.

World Titles – Noordwijk, Holland
They did it – World Champions!
Henley’s dual and reigning Australian champions, from left Andrew Lanyon, John Ellice-Flint and Neville Fielder are now World Champions!
Fighting off jetlag from making their way to Holland to compete in the surf race at the World Surf Lifesaving Championships these champions blitzed the field – well done gents!
These guys are really making clubs in the eastern states sit up and listen when they hear there is a competitor from HENLEY on the start line.
