Radio Operators Certificate
Overview:
Beach patrols communicate with each other and emergency services via a dedicated radio network. This award provides members with skills and knowledge to transmit on the network as part of beach patrols including emergencies and also necessary maintenance of equipment.
Audience:
Suitable for members who have obtained a SRC (primarily 13/14 year olds), and/or members with limited water skills/ability. The radio operator is an important part of every beach patrol.
Pre-requisites:
Members need to be a minimum of 13 years of age on the day of the final assessment.
Content:
- SLSSA Radio Network
- Send and receive techniques
- Phonetic Alphabet
- Maintenance procedures
- Emergency maintenance
Duration:
Approximately 8-10 hours of training followed by a separate assessment.
Timing:
Courses are generally conducted during school holidays (all day sessions) however evening courses (4 x 2hour sessions) are scheduled if sufficient numbers are interested.

Currency:
To remain current an annual proficiency update (approximately 30 minutes) is required.
